Description

MAESTRO DI LONIGO (activo. 1420-40 / .) "Madonna dell´ Umiltà"

Mounted in a modern gothic frame. Attached is a study by Dr Gaudenz Freuler of Zurich confirming the authorship of the work. The identity of this Venetian master is still unknown and the name of Maestro di Lonigo comes from a representation of the Virgin that was located in the Cathedral of Lonigo in Venice, which has now disappeared. This work belongs to a group of panels attributed to the painter in which the Virgin is depicted seated in the "hortus conclusus", adoring the Christ Child who rests on her naked lap with her hands folded. This type of representation created by the Master of Lonigo derives from Gentile da Fabriano's works of the Madonna in Perugia (Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria) and Pisa (Museo Civico), which came to the Veneto through the painters Zanino di Pietro and Jacobello del Fiore. . Temper and gilding on panel.76,5 x 49 cm
