In-12, green lizard, outer quarter of the first board in mauve box, title straddling the joint in large half-green half-mauve mosaic box letters, smooth mute spine, mauve suede lining and endpapers, untrimmed, cover and spine, case and folder sheathed in the same mauve box (A. Devauchelle) First edition. One of 55 copies on vellum pur fil, the only large paper. The fame of this largely autobiographical novel by Henri-Pierre Roché owes much to François Truffaut's 1962 film adaptation, starring Jeanne Moreau as Catherine, Oskar Werner and Henri Serre in the title roles. "From the very first lines, I fell in love with Henri-Pierre Roché's prose," Truffaut recalled in 1987, in Le Plaisir des yeux. Sumptuous binding by Alain Devauchelle in lizard mosaic of mauve box.
