Description

LEDUC (Violette).

La Bâtarde. Paris, Gallimard, 1964. In-8, blue jansenist morocco, smooth spine, purple suede lining and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine, folder and case sheathed in the same morocco (Loutrel). First edition. The work is preceded by a long preface by Simone de Beauvoir, who supported Violette Leduc, both literarily and financially, from 1945 until her death in 1972. Copy n°1, one of 35 on vellum pur fil, the only large paper. A novelistic autobiography, precursor of autofiction, La Bâtarde was for Violette Leduc the book of public consecration: selling 170,000 copies, it was considered for the Goncourt prize. Her previous novels had won her the esteem of Cocteau, Genet, Jouhandeau, Sartre and Nathalie Sarraute, but were little appreciated by the public. A very well bound copy by Loutrel.
