KEROUAC (Jack).

Doctor Sax. Paris, Gallimard, 1962. In-8, black box, two wide strips of leather imitating shagreen mosaic on the first board, one white, the other black, comprising a circle and a round of black box and crossed by two curved scrolls in fawn box, including a broken scroll punctuated with gilt lozenges crossing the field and the upper counterplate, smooth spine, ochre textured paper lining and endpapers, untrimmed, cover and spine, matching transparent spine folder and lined slipcase (Devauchelle). First edition of the first French translation, given by Jean Autret. Copy n°1, one of 41 on pur fil, the only large paper. Written in 1952, while living in Mexico with William Burroughs, and published in New York in 1959, Doctor Sax focuses on the story of a young boy, Jack Duluoz, a double of the author, living in a working-class town in New England, and his encounter with the fantastic and imaginary character who gives the book its title. A very nice copy in an elegant binding signed by Devauchelle. It is part of a cycle of five bindings dedicated to Kerouac's work, whose natural environment is the road. The others are presented under the following four numbers.
