This city that Julien Gracq evokes is Nantes, where he spent his boarding school years at the Lycée Clemenceau, between the ages of eleven and eighteen. "The Shape of a City tells of an arrival in a claustral world at the beginning, and towards the end it describes a departure into the fresh, empty streets of dawn, at once a farewell to the city and a promise of the future" (Bernhild Boie).
