Description

GRACQ (Julien).

André Breton, some aspects of the writer. Paris, José Corti, 1948. In-12, paperback, untrimmed. First edition. The frontispiece reproduces a portrait of André Breton by Hans Bellmer. One of the 20 first copies on vélin du Marais. Autograph letter signed by the author to Jean Millot, dated December 1, 1961: To Mr. Jean Millot, since he is pleased to walk with me for a moment in the company, which is familiar to him, of [André Breton], in full sympathy, Julien Gracq. In this book, which "has been described as the most beautiful, subtle and rigorous of the works devoted to the writer André Breton" (Bernhild Boie), the challenge, according to its author, is to "give an account to some extent of the turbulent waves that a personality of undoubtedly 'large format' - and which in certain respects has become, and deserved to become, exemplary - propagates around him" (p. 11). But when he looks at the phenomenon of André Breton, who was also a friend, Julien Gracq seeks above all to elucidate the stakes of writing, by meditating on the Surrealist themes and dreams. A very nice copy as issued.
