BORGES (Jorge Luis).

Fictions. Paris, Gallimard, 1951. In-12, green half-box with bands, smooth spine, gilt head, cover and spine (P. Goy & C. Vilaine). First edition of the first French translation, given by Paul Verdevoye and Nestor Ibarra. It is the first title to appear in the collection La Croix du Sud directed by Roger Caillois at Gallimard. One of 44 copies on vellum pur fil, the only large paper. Fictions, the original edition of which was published by Victoria Ocampo in 1944, contains Borges' most famous short stories, such as Pierre Menard, author of The Quixote, The Library of Babel, The Garden of Forking Paths and The South. The collection received the first International Publishers' Prize, awarded in 1961, ex-aequo with Samuel Beckett's novel trilogy. Beautiful copy prepared by Patrice Goy and Carine Vilaine.
