In German to Karl Christian Gmelin (1762-1837) in Karlsruhe. Because of a request of the student Alexander Gmelin at the medical academy (in Moscow) concerning the Gmelin scholarship: "...prompts me to ask you whether a general certificate of the vice-president of the academy, which includes all his previous certificates (as it were curriculum vitae) and bears the seal of the academy, would be sufficient to achieve its purpose. Here, it is customary to keep all original credentials with the papers of the student they concern, until the attainment of a higher degree, where they are then...no longer useful to him.
