Hind 83rd - Focillon 224-285, 337-338, 340-355 and 357-395th - Second edition. - Piranesi's (1720-1778) series of copper plates, on which he worked for eight years, presents the ruins of ancient tombs in Rome and the surrounding area. After its publication, the Antichità Romane had a resounding effect in almost all of Europe. Piranesi received orders from Sweden, France and England, and even the Russian Tsarina ordered the work. - The two existing volumes show, among other things, tombs around Rome, bridges and monumental buildings such as the Curia Hostilia, the substructure of the temple of Claudius, Hadrian's mausoleum (Castel Sant'Angelo) and the Theatre of Marcellus. - Vol. IV without plates 4 and 21, but with the 3 unnumbered plates. - Bindings with traces of use, spine removed. Occasional light foxing, few traces of folding, otherwise overall good broad-margined impressions. - Second edition. Famous work by the renowned Roman engraver Piranesi. Contemp. boards. 59 : 43 cm. With 121 numbered plates (of 123; of which 2 engr. titles, 2 text coppers, 66 double-page and 6 multiple folding). - Vol. IV lacking plates 4 and 21, but with the 3 not numb. plates. Bindings with traces of use, spine removed. Slight isolated foxmarks, few folding traces, all in all good and broad-margined prints.
