The Venetian printer decided to collect the unsold copies in a single volume and gave the prints a general title page with the revised printing date. His detailed studies of the reproductive apparatus, described in the third treatise, together with the researches carried out by Redi, helped to prove the unfoundedness of the theory of spontaneous generation, anticipating the advent of the evolutionist hypothesis. The Lezione Accademica also represents the first systematic study of the origin of the Alpine springs, a true landmark in geological literature, accompanied by a plate that is certainly one of the first examples of modern stratigraphic illustration. - Lacking the first 2 nn.
