Description

Kalender.

(So) man zelt nach Christi geburt M.D.XLIIII. Jar. (Fragment). O. O., Dr. and year (probably Zurich, Froschauer, 1543). Approx. 17.4 x 23.5 cm. With two woodcuts (one of which only half preserved). The woodcuts show Mars (only partly preserved) and a bloodletting man. Probably this fragment is the Froschauerkalender, one copy of which was in the collection of Paul Heitz, which was exhibited by the Munich antiquarian bookshop Theodor Ackermann in 1980 and sold to the Badische Landesbibliothek in 1981. In the small exhibition catalogue "German Calendars in the 16th Century" of the antiquarian bookshop it says under number 7: "Another, not proven Froschauer calendar for 1544. Above the country coats of arms also used in our no. 5, below the title line a woodcut of Mars, a bloodletting man and an only partially preserved Jupiter." The phlebotomist is illustrated a few pages further on in the exhibition catalogue. If our conjecture is correct, our fragment would be part of the second known copy of this broadsheet calendar. - With small corner tear and four holes in the character legend (minor loss of letters), brown stained. - From a Bavarian private collection.
