GAZETTE DU BON TON (La). Art, fashion & frivolities. Paris : Les Publications Lucien Vogel, 1912-1925. - 64 issues (of 69) in-4, in sheets. Almost complete collection of this famous and luxurious fashion magazine initiated by Lucien Vogel, published between 1912 and 1925, which remains one of the main showcases of French taste during the Roaring Twenties. It featured contributions from fashionable authors of the time such as Jean Giraudoux, Tristan Bernard, Gérard Bauër, Henri Duvernois, Émile Henriot, Pierre Mac Orlan, Henri de Régnier, Jean Cocteau, Radiguet, etc. Their columns cover fashion as well as shows, exhibitions, society columns, literary news and travel reports. Each issue is illustrated with beautiful colour compositions in the text and stencil plates, most of them representing the toilets invented by the artists themselves and by couturiers such as Beer, Dœuillet, Jeanne Lanvin, Paul Poiret, Camille Roger, Madeleine Vionnet, Worth, etc. The main artists who collaborated with this magazine are Léon BAKST, George BARBIER, Eduardo GARCÍA BENITO, Robert BONFILS, Bernard BOUTET DE MONVEL, Pierre BRISSAUD, Umberto BRUNELLESCHI, Charles MARTIN, Georges LEPAPE, Valentine HUGO, André-Édouard MARTY, Jean-Émile LABOUREUR, etc. Includes: - 1st year, 1912-1913: 7 issues out of 12 [70 plates] . Only incomplete year. Numbers 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 are missing. Each present issue is complete with its plates. - 2nd year, 1914-1915 : Year complete in 9 issues, i.e. 8 booklets, the last one counting for 2 issues . No. 6 and 7 include the red printed flyer entitled To Our Subscribers concerning the notice of publication of an exceptional issue of the magazine twice a year . The eleventh plate of number 7 is not numbered, it represents an advertisement illustrated by Pierre Brissaud for Renault cars, captioned "Finally, here it is! Plate 2 of the last issue is a duplicate. - 3rd year, 1920 : Year complete with its issues and its 127 plates including 48 sketches . Only 3 introductory leaves are missing in the number 4, corresponding to pages XXVII to XXXII reserved for advertisements. 2 subscription forms to the Gazette in the first issue are enclosed. The first and the 8th issue include in addition an unnumbered plate for Morny's perfumery; the second issue includes an advertisement on coated paper for the artist-decorator Madame Pangon. Number 8 is complete with Paul Poiret's 4-page lecture at the Salon d'Automne, entitled Défense de la mode. Number 10 contains a flyer indicating the presence of "the table of contents of the two issues of the Gazette du Bon Ton published in the second half of 1914". - 4th year, 1921 : Year complete with its issues and its 100 plates, 20 of which are sketches . The suite of 4 lithographs of number 3 is duplicated, as is plate 67. 5th year, 1922 : Year complete with its issues but including 149 of the 157 plates required . The sketch plates of the last 3 issues have no title . They each contain black fashion figures on the back. - 6th year, 1923-1924 : Year complete with its issues and 58 plates . The first issue contains the brochure informing the reader of the change of direction, accompanied by a subscription form. Number 5 is enriched with a dedication in pen addressed to Jacques Crépineau by a friend. - 7th year, 1924-1925 : Year complete with its issues and 70 plates . Number 7, devoted to the Pavillon de l'élégance, contains 12 plates, namely plates 49 to 59 and an advertisement for the wallpaper factory "La Décoration Française Mahieu, Devaux & Cie". Plates 54 and 57 are not numbered and plate 51 is mistakenly noted as being part of issue 6 of the Gazette. The last issue ends with two leaves and a series of 8 plates, the whole giving the representation in gilt of 12 dresses. Tears and repairs to the spine of several covers among the early issues. Staining in the upper margin of the cover of the summer 1915 issue and on the back cover of issue 5 of 1920. Minor transfers of some engravings. Some scattered foxing in places.
