FLAUBERT (Gustave). Hérodias. Preface by Anatole France. Paris : A. Ferroud, 1892. - In-8, 248 x 159 : (2 ff.), XXXII pp., (1 blank f.), 88 pp., (2 ff. last blank), illustrated cover. Half red morocco with corners, gilt fillets, smooth spine decorated with multi-lobed compartments of green, black and burgundy morocco, decorated and bordered with gilt arabesques, as well as a gilt plate representing Herodias carrying the head of John the Baptist, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Yseux sr de Simier). First separate edition. UNIQUE COPY, on Arches vellum, whose 21 compositions by Georges Rochegrosse were replaced at the time by reproductions drawn and painted with gold highlights by the Greek painter Alexander Pascalides, a friend of the French artist with whom he was to realize a large panorama representing the deluge in Chicago. The copy is justified by Ferroud as follows: "unique copy containing the reproduction of Rochegrosse's drawings. A.F.". Each drawing is signed by the artist: " d'après Rochegrosse. APascalidès". Copy enriched with a portrait of the author engraved by Champollion after Caroline Commanville, and a suite with remarks on vellum of Rochegrosse's compositions engraved by Champollion, except for one which is in condition with the letter without remarks. Very nice mosaic binding by Yseux.
