Description

DON (Ion). Old and New. [Paris] : Avenir Publicité, [ca. 1913]. - Large folio album, 500 x 315 : 29 plates, printed cover. In sheets, in a cloth folder with flaps. Very rare album of color caricatures of French personalities of the early twentieth century, made by the caricaturist and cartoonist Ion DON (1894-1985). The edition was drawn to 200 numbered copies. The number of this one has been erased. In spite of this edition, the copies on sale are extremely rare and those we have been able to find have a variable number of plates. While most of them have between 10 and 20, this one has 29, which is currently the most complete we have been able to list, but we are not able to ensure that all of them were made for this album. No copy seems to be in the French public libraries. This copy is enriched with an original drawing signed by Don representing a lady in profile named Madame Leber, done in Indian ink on tracing paper, and two magazines illustrated with drawings by Don, namely the special issue of Le Rire of June 1932, devoted to horse racing, and the issue 23 of June 10, 1939 of La Vie Parisienne. Tears repaired on the front cover, the spine has been redone. Wear and tears to the folder. Attached : - DON (Ion). La Femme au Pesage. Paris : André Dantan, [1931]. - Album in-folio, 440 x 315 : (2 ff.), 36 plates, red printed cover. In sheets, filled cover, folder and case. Album of 36 plates by Ion DON, printed and hand-colored by André Dantan, caricaturing women's fashion on the racecourse of Deauville. Edition at 250 copies signed by the artist at the justification (n° 86). A few small tears on the cover. Slight wear and restoration to the slipcase.
