Jansenist red morocco, spine ribbed, gilt fillet inside, gilt edges on witnesses, first cover preserved, slipcase (H. Duhayon). Very rare first edition of Georges Courteline's first work, dedicated to Jules Moinaux, gathering 18 comic short stories. It is illustrated with 51 black compositions by Léon Brac, including one on the cover, one in the frontispiece, 48 in the text, at the head of a chapter or in the cul-de-lampe, and one full page. ONE OF 25 NUMBERED COPIES ON HOLLAND PAPER (n° 15), the only edition on large paper. A perfectly bound copy by Henri Duhayon, enriched with a beautiful autograph letter signed by Courteline, 4 pages in-12, addressed to the actor Camille Dumény about the play L'Article 330, a one-act comedy performed at the Théâtre Antoine on December 12, 1900, in which Dumény played the main role. A perfectly preserved copy despite the slightly faded spine.
