First edition dedicated to Madame Michelet, of this collection of 12 short stories about the revolution of 1870, honouring in a patriotic fibre the "obscure heroes who gave their lives for a country that will never know their name" (preface). The illustration includes a portrait of the author engraved by Burney after Ulmann, and 12 out-of-text compositions by P. Jazet, etched by Henri Toussaint. Edition of 1000 copies, this one being one of the 150 first copies on japan or vellum, here on japan (n° 129), including a suite of illustrations before the letter. UNIQUE EDITION, WITH 59 SUPERB ORIGINAL AQUARELLES SIGNED BY ALBERT BLIGNY (1849-1908), placed in the margins. These watercolours are real small paintings of a great realism. The artist was a friend of Henri Pille; he exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1875 and specialized in military subjects. A very fine copy bound by Marius Michel. A few scattered foxing without seriousness.
