CLARETIE (Jules). The Cane of Mr. Michelet. Walks and memories. Preface by Alfred Mézières. Paris : Librairie L. Red morocco, double frame of gilt fillets on the boards, gilt foliage at the corners on the inner frame, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt lace inside, gilt head, untrimmed, cover preserved (Marius Michel). First edition dedicated to Madame Michelet, of this collection of 12 short stories about the revolution of 1870, honouring in a patriotic fibre the "obscure heroes who gave their lives for a country that will never know their name" (preface). The illustration includes a portrait of the author engraved by Burney after Ulmann, and 12 out-of-text compositions by P. Jazet, etched by Henri Toussaint. Edition of 1000 copies, this one being one of the 150 first copies on japan or vellum, here on japan (n° 129), including a suite of illustrations before the letter. UNIQUE EDITION, WITH 59 SUPERB ORIGINAL AQUARELLES SIGNED BY ALBERT BLIGNY (1849-1908), placed in the margins. These watercolours are real small paintings of a great realism. The artist was a friend of Henri Pille; he exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1875 and specialized in military subjects. A very fine copy bound by Marius Michel. A few scattered foxing without seriousness.
