First edition of only 250 copies of the first complete biography of the famous actress Virginie Déjazet (1798-1875). Unique copy, numbered 48, from the library of the writer, playwright and administrator of the Comédie-Française Jules Claretie (1840-1913), who enriched it with numerous documents: - 14 engraved or lithographed portraits of Virginie Déjazet, in black and in color, depicting her in everyday life or in various roles . - 2 photographic portraits on albumen paper pasted on cardboard, by J. Tourtin, representing Virginie Déjazet in the roles of Gentil-Bernard and Garat. - Original photograph on albumen paper, anonymous, representing Virginie Déjazet surrounded by her family in a garden, dedicated by the artist to her niece and dated 1862. 2 L.A.S. from Virginie Déjazet, one of one page in-8, October 5, 1874, the other undated of 3 pages in-8. Entrance to the funeral of Virginie Déjazet on December 4, 1875 at the Church of the Trinity . - L.A.S. from L.-Henry Lecomte, 22 February 1892, to M. Sapin, one page in-12. Beautiful letter on the work: "Because of the difference in genres and the inferiority of the Déjazet repertoire, I thought I should focus less on the artist than on the woman. With Déjazet, moreover, the woman is the most attractive of subjects, and I possess a number of letters from her which I hope will be a treat for the press and the public." - Facsimile of an extract from a letter by Déjazet, with an autograph note by Jules Claretie . - Lithographed portrait of the actor Charles Fechter after Eustache-Lorsay, creator of the role of Armand Duval in La Dame aux Camélias and lover of Virginie Déjazet. - Article by Max de Revel on Fechter, 4 pages in-8 - Two articles on the actor Francisque jeune, by Salvador and Paul de Kock . - Two lithographed portraits of Francisque jeune. - Handwritten copy of 28 letters from Virginie Déjazet, with autograph notes signed by Jules Claretie. The copy has also been enriched, separately, with 3 C.A.S. and 3 L.A.S. from Jules Claretie, all on the letterhead of the Comédie-Française, a modern photograph by Charles Fechter, and the August 1912 issue 46 of Portraits de Femmes devoted to Virginie Déjazet. Spine and edges of the boards browned, rubbing from use on the spine. Tear without missing a leaf (pp. 211-212). Provenance: Jules Claretie. Attached, by the same author : - Un Amour de Déjazet.
