Description

COLIN (Paul). Le Tumulte noir. Paris : Succès, [1929]. - Album in-folio, 472 x 318 : (29 ff.), printed cover. In sheets, filled cover. First edition and first print run of this superb album, the first by the designer and poster artist Paul COLIN (1892-1985). It is rightly considered as the artist's masterpiece, which magnifies Josephine Baker and the Revue nègre, a troupe that came from Broadway in 1925, which was made up of 15 musicians including Sidney Bechet and 13 dancers including Josephine Baker who was only 19 years old at the time. It was thanks in part to Colin and the posters he made featuring the dancer that she was able to launch her career and become one of the biggest stars of the music hall and a true icon of the Roaring Twenties. This album is composed of 29 sheets, namely a justification sheet, a false title sheet, a title sheet with on the back an original lithograph entitled "Retour du music-hall", a sheet with Rip's introduction, 42 original lithographs, one of which on a double page, spread over 22 leaves, a humorous text by Josephine Baker in facsimile of her handwriting on fine paper, a calligram printed on grey wove paper (another calligram appears on the reverse of a lithograph), and a leaf with the mention of the printers. In total, there are 43 lithographs coloured with the pattern by J. Saudé, 2 calligrams and 1 text by Josephine Baker in facsimile of her writing. The edition of this album was limited to 520 copies. This one is one of the 500 on tinted vellum paper from Papeteries Aussedat. This edition, which seems important, is today to be reconsidered as complete copies have become rare. Letter from the printers on the cover : to Doctor Foust-sier, // the only creator of the marvellous // specific remedy against // old age and... negritis : the // formidable Neige des Cévennes // Henri Chachoin Édouard DupontExemplaire comprenant le papillon précisant que " Cet album ne contient aucune publicité " . It is enriched with a greeting card for 1958, including on the front a composition by Paul Colin reproduced in black, and on the back these autograph greetings from the artist: "Best wishes while waiting for the joy of seeing you again. Paul Colin. - Yes, thank you again for the article. Cover slightly soiled, tears on the back which has been reinforced. The crystal paper which covers the cover is glued. The interior has been reinforced later with a red paper flap folder, glued to the spine and to the inside of the second cover. The first and last leaves, which are the same sheet, containing the justification and the mention of the printers, show tears on the edges and at the central fold. All other leaves are perfectly preserved. Jacques Crépineau has placed the copy in a large rigid ribbon folder.
