Description

CHEVALIER (Maurice). Ma route et mes chansons. Paris : René Julliard, [1946]. - In-8, 186 x 137 : 275 pp, (2 ff. last blank), printed cover. Grey cloth with bradel, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Ateliers Laurenchet). First edition of the first volume of Maurice Chevalier's memoirs. Unique copy, on publisher's paper, enriched with an original gouache mounted on a mitre, representing Maurice Chevalier as a caricature, surrounded by the words "Plein feu" in alternating red and yellow capital letters on a black background, as well as 27 original watercolours placed for the most part at the head of the chapters and overflowing onto the text . These drawings are not signed but are the work of a true artist. The style allows us to affirm that they were done at a time close to the publication of the book. Jacques Crépineau has enriched the copy with part of the trailer, the stamp issued in 1990 in the effigy of Maurice Chevalier, a postcard showing Mistinguett in 1903, dedicated by Chevalier to his friend Benoît-Léon Deutsch, and a second postcard showing the Manneken-pis disguised as Maurice Chevalier, dedicated by the latter to Jacques Crépineau: "Thank you, dear Jacques Crépineau, and may this Manneken shower you with joy and good health throughout 1964. There is also, added at the end, the article by Eileen and Robert Mason Pollock published in March 1969 in the Reader's Digest Selection entitled Chevalier ou 80 ans de jeunesse. A good copy in a later binding by the Laurenchet workshops.
