Henry MONNIER (1799-1877). Self-portrait as Monsieur Prudhomme, with autograph inscription signed; brown ink, 17 x 11.5 cm on sight. Under his self-portrait in bust form, disguised as Monsieur Prudhomme, Monnier inscribed one of his character's famous maxims: "Yes, I maintain my statement, if Napoleon, the first of his name, had remained an artillery lieutenant, he would still be on the throne."He signed: "Prudhomme" then "certified true Henry Monnier".
