Description

Léon BAKST (1866-1924). L.A.S. and autograph manuscript, April 29, 1919, to Jean-Gabriel Domergue; half page and one page in-4, envelope. Important text on the art of scenery, in answer to an inquiry, asking "that no line, no word be thrown away, nor softened"... "The most horrible routine, which lies in the persuasion, that the scenery-maker "frames" the play - reigns in almost every theatre in the universe. It is precisely because of this bias that the modern set is in a state of artistic infancy and generally yields in importance, during the performance, to its cousins - the drama, the ballet and the opera. For him, "the scenery in the theatre is a great parallel art, which has the reason to be by itself, while being the eloquent companion of the work represented [...] the scenery designer must be a poet, a painter, a scholar and a fantasist, who has the magic of making the beauty of the show triple, just by his personal vision"... But he deplores that authors see in the scenery "only a little amusing background", and dread important scenery; and he concludes: "Poor argument!».
