Lucien Pierre SERGENT (1849-1904) The departure of the Emperor from Torquay (England) for the island of Saint Helena in 1815. Pair of oil on canvas signed and dated lower right 41 x 71 cm On July 15, 1815, Napoleon left the island of Aix aboard the three-masted Bellerophon, a British military ship that took him to Torquay, in the south of England. On board, the Emperor was accompanied by Captain Maitland, who put his cabin at his disposal, as well as Rear Admiral Sir Henri Hotham, commander of the English squadron, and a number of French officers who had accompanied him on this voyage. The Bellerophon, a ship built by the Royal Navy, participated in three important battles: - The Battle of 13 Prairial Year II, which pitted the English against the French, between 28 May and 1 June 1794, off the island of Ouessant. - The Battle of Aboukir, which again pitted the English against the French, on August 1 and 2, 1798, in the Bay of Aboukir in Egypt. - The Battle of Trafalgar, which pitted French and Spanish forces against the English on 21 October 1805.
