Description

China, Yuan period (1279-1368), large gilded wood and red and black lacquered subject, representing a Luohan seated in padmâsana on a base in the shape of a double inverted lotus, the back of the left hand resting on the right foot, the hand in karana-mudra, a gesture that drives away negative energies, the index and little fingers extended, the middle fingers folded over a sphere, probably a fruit; the right forearm raised, the hand slightly closed. The Saint, with a shaved head, is dressed in a dhoti that leaves his torso bare, and a cloak covering his shoulders and falling in heavy folds around him.
