WOODEN ELEMENT representing Joan van Oldenbarnevelt. Deeply carved oak panel. Netherlands, early 19th century or earlier. 62x42x3. Very represented in paintings and engravings, this character was in his time a prominent personality. He was born in 1547 and died in The Hague in 1619. He was a lawyer of the States of Holland, a politician and an advisor to William I of Orange-Nassau. This panel was probably once part of a set of wood panelling depicting political figures from the history of this country, in a Dutch institutional building.
