Description

JEAN-BAPTISTE II LELARGE (Paris, 1711-1771)

PAIR OF STOOLS Paris, Louis XV period, circa 1760 Beechwood repainted in grey and varnished-polished; cochineal-stained silk velvet on horsehair, gilt bronze nails on gold braid Restorations from use and maintenance, restoration of colour and trim H. 49 cm, D. 39 cm Stamped JB Lelarge Provenance Private collection, Paris, since 2012 This pair of moulded and carved beechwood stools with fan decoration has a seat upholstered in animal hair covered with cochineal silk velvet resting on four curved legs joined by a circular brace. The elegance of the mouldings recalls here the sober Prie- Dieu from the Château de Choisy, which the curator of the Musée Carnavalet, Anne Forray- Carlier, has been able to compare with certain chairs produced by the carpenters Jean-Baptiste Tilliard (1685-1766) or Nicolas-Quinibert Foliot (1706-1776), who received important orders from the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne (fig. 1) Our two stools are part of a larger suite of which at least a third example appeared on the art market in 1960. Each seat is stamped by the carpenter Jean-Baptiste II Lelarge, who was awarded the title of Master in 1738. The family workshop was located on rue de Cléry in Paris.
