Pair of wall lamps with conch shells and flowers Louis XV period, circa 1740-1745 Gilded bronze with mercury and leaf Traces of wear to the gilding H. 36 cm, L. 30 cm Provenance Private collection, Paris, since 2000 This pair of rocaille sconces is surprisingly decorated with flowers. The two arms of light blossom into volubilis whose heart is formed by basins richly decorated with plant corollas separated by a line of pearls. They constitute the ramifications of a leafy branch which emerges from the support decorated with marine conches. This mixture of flowers and shells, rare in lighting fixtures, became more popular in tapestry and furniture bronzes in the early 1740s.
