Description

Manufacture de Rouen, circa 1725 Earthenware, blue and red painted decoration A crack restored D. 55 cm On this large circular dish, the usual blue and red decoration with mantling frames a central rose with symmetrical decoration animated by two putti. The naked children, whose bodies are carefully modelled in blue, stand out against the white enamel background. Leaning against each other, they play amidst the two-coloured arabesques. This motif of figures modelled in blue was used in a group of dishes from Rouen, of which the Louvre has one example (fig. 1). A group of naked children stands out against the ochre and niello background of the rose window, which is also framed by a wide band of radiating decoration.
