Description

PAIR OF CORNET VASES WITH RADIANT DECOR Manufacture of Rouen, first quarter of the 18th century Faïence de grand feu Reprise à l'émail H. 44 cm Provenance Galerie Nicollier Private collection, Paris, 1995 This pair of octagonal cone vases illustrates the great period of Rouen, that of the radiant decoration known as "aux lambrequins". The motifs painted on the body and the foot evoke the fabric festoons of the baldachin and window embrasures of the end of the reign of Louis XIV. They are drawn in a cameo of blues on a white background, between two rows of gadroons, as can also be seen on a piece in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (fig. 1). On our model, the ornaments are distributed on the edges of the vases and not on the faces. This highlights the quality of our painter. Note that there is no similar model in Jean Bloch's collection, one of the most beautiful collections of Rouen faience of the 20th century.
