JACQUES PRÉVOST (reçu maître en 1670-après 1716)

GOLDEN CUP WITH ITS COVER Paris, 1702-1703 Silver gilt Very good condition, remarkable quality of the gilt H. 11 cm, D. 17 cm Weight : 550 g approx. Master goldsmith's marks Provenance Private collection, Paris, 2010 This rare giltwood cup, which has kept its cover, presents an elegant stylized decoration. It bears the mark of Jacques Prévost, who was awarded the title of Master Goldsmith in 1670. The hallmarks allow it to be dated precisely to 1702-1703. With its pineapple-shaped grip on a base of acanthus leaves and two handles ending in a scroll, our model is entirely comparable to those acquired by the Louvre in 2020 (fig. 1-2). This type of ornamentation, popular at the beginning of the 18th century, was used by the greatest silversmiths of the capital for such prestigious clients as the Duchess of Modena, granddaughter of Louis XIV and the Marquise de Montespan. Two gadrooned friezes run along the base of the lid and the pedestal of our bowl. They encircle the body and highlight its very graphic decoration. This alternating pattern of lambrequins and water drops can be found on some later goblets such as this pair of gilt pots, still intended for the Duchess of Modena and made in 1718 (fig. 3).
