RUSSIAN WRITING BOX - EARLY 19th CENTURY Karelian birch burl, blackened wood, bronze and gilt brass H. 24 cm, W. 47 cm, D. 32 cm Of rectangular shape, this inkwell made of Karelian birch veneer, frequently used by Russian cabinetmakers, is soberly ornamented with friezes of oves and heart-shaped grapes. The upper part is structured by a sphere in the center and four bronze inkwells or powder boxes, whose lid is decorated with palmettes and a stylized seed. Two compartments in blackened wood are intended to receive the penholders. The set rests on four small claw feet.
