Description

PAIR OF ORNAMENTAL VASES "WITH FAUN MASKS France, late 18th-early 19th century Antique green marble from Greece and gilt bronzes H. 62 cm, D. 36 cm This pair of baluster-shaped antique vases with hemmed necks is made of antique green marble from Greece, very popular during the reign of Louis XVI. A powerful ornamentation of chiseled and gilded bronzes underlines the contours, highlighting the preciousness of the marble and the depth of its green color. A frieze of palmettes and tulips, centered on a radiant sun motif, surrounds the body. On the sides, two forcefully treated silene profiles serve as gripping handles. The quadrangular bronze base is punctuated with quatrefoils on an amatized background. With these contrasting colors and materials, combined with a form inspired by Antiquity, this pair of vases of remarkable quality of execution is in the great tradition of the so-called "mounted" objects found under Louis XVI.
