Student of Carl Van Loo, Natoire and Boucher, François-Hubert Drouais was admitted to the Academy in 1758. Called to Versailles, he worked for Madame de Pompadour, then for Madame du Barry and became the Court's portraitist between the aging Nattier and Madame Vigée-Lebrun. He is one of the last artists of the century to give portraiture a certain sumptuousness while showing concern for its individuality.
