Aalto, Alvar (1898 Kuortane - 1976 Helsinki) Designer vase (Savoy vase). Glass (opaque white underlay), blown and cut. Part of the littala Alvar Aalto Collection. Engraved with designer's signature on the bottom. In 1936, the Finnish designer couple Alvar and Aino Aalto designed this vase shape as a furnishing element for the luxury house Savoy in Helsinki. The shape, which alludes to the Finnish lakeland and the play of waves on the water, quickly gained great popularity, which is why it was reproduced in large numbers in the following period and still is today. The vase was presented at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 and achieved the status of an incunabulum of design art. H 16 cm. Design Alvar Aalto. Savoy vase.
