Nissen ZBI 1787. - First edition. - Includes Ernst Haeckel's "Report on the Siphonophorae," an account of the state jellyfish, an order of marine invertebrates consisting of colonies of individuals rather than single organisms. The best known example is the Portuguese galley (Physalia physalis). Haeckel's detailed account includes not only examples collected during the pioneering voyage of HMS Challenger, but also species found on earlier and later expeditions. Working with his lithographer Adolf Giltsch, Haeckel produced plasma structures in scientifically sound, as well as artistically pleasing, renderings using the "camera lucida". - Margins slightly browned, plates occasionally slightly foxed. - Provenance: From the former possession of Paul von Ritter (1825-1915) with autograph dedication from Ernst Haeckel to the aforementioned, dated Jena, 10.1.1889.
