ALEXIS GRIMOU

(Argenteuil, 1678 - Paris, 1733) Portrait of a young man with a red cloak Oil on canvas, 80.5 x 64.5 cm Biographical information on Alexis Grimou is scarce, except for the fact that we can see in his works the influence of De Troy and Hyacinthe Rigaud and in particular a Rembrandt-like approach, which earned him the nickname 'Rembrandt of France'. The artist's style reveals a detachment from the classical and academic tradition, characterising his works with a veiled humour and a scornfulness derived from the Dutch tradition.
