Biographical information on Alexis Grimou is scarce, except for the fact that we can see in his works the influence of De Troy and Hyacinthe Rigaud and in particular a Rembrandt-like approach, which earned him the nickname 'Rembrandt of France'. The artist's style reveals a detachment from the classical and academic tradition, characterising his works with a veiled humour and a scornfulness derived from the Dutch tradition.
