GILLIS MOSTAERT (maniera di)
(Hulst, about 1534 - Antwerp, 1598)
Crucifixion
Oil on canvas, 71X51 cm
Trained with Jan Mandyn, the artist is known to have been enrolled in the guild of St. Luke in 1554. His first biographers present him as a bohemian, insolent and mystifying. However, his production attests to a good talent, with interesting ideas of invention, devoting himself to sacred themes but also to landscape and history. Ancient inventories mention a large number of his works and document that the artist was also appreciated for his small winter and nocturnal landscapes. Returning to the panel under consideration, we find interesting comparisons with the one sold at Dorotheum on 9 March 2014, lot 766.
