PIETER POURBUS (attr. A)

(Gouda, 1523 - Bruges, 1584) St. Nicodemus Oil on panel, 49X25 cm Settled in Bruges around 1540, in 1543 he was admitted to the guild of painters of the city; in the same period he married the sister of the local painter Lancelot Blondeel. His production excels in the portrait genre, but he devoted himself to painting allegorical and religious scenes, such as the monumental Last Judgement (oil on canvas, 228.5X181 cm) housed in the Groeningemuseum in Bruges. His production includes 40 signed or documented paintings and another 30 attributed. He also realised architectural projects for the celebration of the entrance to Bruges of Prince Philip II of Spain in 1549.
