Buys was born in Amsterdam and trained with Cornelis Pronk, Jacob de Wit and Cornelis Troost, eventually becoming director of the Amsterdam Academy of Drawing. He painted portraits, bas-reliefs and tapestries, drew book illustrations and made copies of the works of the best masters of the 17th century. Buys became a member of the Guild of St. Luke of Amsterdam in 1750.
