Description

GIOVAN BATTISTA LAMA (attr. A)

(Naples, 1673 - 1748) Deposition Oil on canvas, cm 35X52 The image presents peculiar style characteristics of the Neapolitan school of the early eighteenth century and close affinities with Luca Giordano and Paolo De Matteis, but there are strong comparisons with the production of Giovanni Battista Lama. The author has his own creative autonomy, not immune to Solimenesque influences, clearly perceptible in the canvas presented here, which possesses a solid and secure quality, veined with Rococo sensibility. These indications suggest a date to his maturity, around the fourth decade of the 18th century, similar to the canvases in the Neapolitan church of Santa Maria della Pazienza alla Cesarea dated 1730-1732 (cf. Spinosa 1988, p. 275, fig. 178, card 154). Bibliography of reference: N. Spinosa, Pittura napoletana del Settecento dal Barocco al Rococo, Naples, 1988, p. 93; pp. 138 ; 139
