JACOB ROOS (attr. A)

(Rome, 1682 - Naples, 1730) Pastoral scene Oil on canvas, 24X38 cm Jacob Roos is one of the best animalier painters active in Naples at the beginning of the 18th century. His work reveals his aesthetic value and a sensitivity that is part of that Rococo landscape painting for the modern atmosphere, soothed and Arcadian. Jacob is the eldest son of Philip Peter Roos and a member of the workshop whose founder was Johann Henrich Roos. Born in Rome, he learned his art from his father (documented in Italy from 1680) and was influenced by the taste for Capitoline landscapes, following a similar path to that of Brandi, whom De Dominici says was in the Eternal City at a young age (B. De Dominici, Vite de' pittori- napoletani, Naples 1742, III, pp. 560-65). The catalogue of the artist is still scanty, but his works reveal a refined narrative taste, with modulated light effects and lively colouring.
