Description

LAMBERT LOMBARD (cerchia di)

(Liège, 1505 - 1566) Last Supper Oil on panel, 95X115 cm The painting shows stylistic features close to those of the Flemish painter Lambert Lombard. The work, in fact, expresses the Italianizing character that distinguished some schools of art in northern Europe around the middle of the sixteenth century and Lambert, after his trip to Italy in 1537, is to be considered one of the greatest exponents of that mannerist taste. The centre of diffusion was Antwerp, which from the third decade was the cradle of the so-called Romanists whose experiences were anticipated by Gossaert, who assimilated Italian culture supported by a strong temperament immune to academicism. The production of Lambert Lombard shows an extraordinary assimilation of Italian culture, in the Eternal City, in fact, designed ancient sculptures, copied the works of Raphael, building a reputation as a lover of antiquity and expert connoisseur of art.
