PIETRO PAOLO RUBENS (maniera di)
(Siegen, 1577 - Antwerp, 1640)
Lions
Oil on canvas, 30X38 cm
Datable to the 18th century, the painting was attributed to Pietro Paolo Rubens, as an autonomous study connected to the famous painting depicting Daniel in the lions' den made in 1615 and today kept in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. In order to complete the composition, the artist made countless drawings and sketches from life, going to the Royal Seraglio in Brussels. These sheets enable us to understand his meticulous approach to form, movement and the aspects of these animals that attracted his attention.
