GYSBERT VAN DER KUYL (attr. A)

(Gorinchem, 1604 - 1673) Scene of tavern Oil on copper, 19X16 cm Provenance: Genoa, Galleria Spinola (from label on verso) Colonel Burnaby (from label on verso) Cologne, Van Ham, 11 May 2012, lot 545 (as attributed to Gysbert van Der Kuyl) Of Kuyl we possess little information, we know him active in Utrecht in 1625 where he frequented the workshop of Gerrit van Honthorst and probably in 1629 he is in Rome, member of Bent and resident in the house of Jean Ducamps in Via Margutta. Still present in Rome in July 1631 and 1636 we know him mentioned in police records as a witness. According to Houbraken he lived in the Eternal City until 1649 (cf. EJ Sluijter, Een aanvulling op het oeuvre van Gerard van Kuijl, Oud Holland 92 (1978), pp. 264 ; 265).
