Portrait of a Knight of the Cross of Saint James Oil on canvas, 95X70 cm The Order of Santiago is a religious and military order founded in the 12th century and named after the national patron saint of Spain, Saint James the Greater. The initial purpose of the Order was to protect pilgrims along the Way of St. James of Compostela and to repel Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula.
