Mart Stam1899 Purmerend - 1986 Goldach (Switzerland)
Tubular steel construction, chrome-plated. Seat, backrest and armrests in black leather. Underneath the seat surface with tensioning brackets. On the underside with leather embossing "THONET" on both sides.
Year of design: 1926; finish: around 1990.
Chrome plating in very good condition.Leather upholstery with slight signs of wear.
Dimensions: h. 85 cm, seat height 45 cm.
Mart Stam
1899 Purmerend - 1986 Goldach (Switzerland)
Dutch architect and designer. In 1926 he invented and designed the first cantilever chair, which Marcel Breuer eventually developed further. 1928-29 worked as an architect in Frankfurt am Main and as a guest lecturer at the Bauhaus in Dessau, 1930-34 in Russia and other countries, worked as an architect in Amsterdam until 1948. In 1939 he became director of the Amsterdam School of Arts and Crafts. 1950-52 rector of the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art (KHB). In 1953 he returned to Amsterdam. At the beginning of 1977 he moved to Switzerland.
