"Moor with White Horse". Johann Joachim Kaendler for Meissen. 1935- 1947. Johann Joachim Kaendler1706 Fischbach/Dresden - 1775 Meißen Porcelain, glazed and painted in polychrome onglaze colours, partially decorated with gold. On the back of the naturalistic base with the fourfold cut sword mark in underglaze blue. On the underside with the embossed model number "1067" and the embossed numeral "10". The group of figures is listed in 1753 in the inventory of the confectionery of the Count of Brühl: "Moor with horse". Lit.: Albiker, Carl: The Meissen porcelain animals in the 18th century. Berlin, 1959, no. 246 with ill. Bergmann, Sabine / Bergmann, Thomas: Meissener Figuren Modellnummern 1 - 3000, Erlangen 2017, cat . no . 1668, p. 292. Base with continuous fire crack underneath, not visible in the top view. The front right horse leg at the o. base as well as the u. rein loop with high quality executed, not visible restoration, the o. rein part probably also high quality restored (?). Two light purple brush marks at the top of the mane, a tiny brown inclusion between the horse's ears. Measures: h. 43 cm. Johann Joachim Kaendler 1706 Fischbach/Dresden - 1775 Meißen Kaendler was apprentice of the Dresden court sculptor Benjamin Thomae in 1723.By his works for the Green Vault Kaendler attracted the attention of August the Strong, was appointed court sculptor in 1730 and shortly after appointed to the Meissen manufactory. As the main sculptor he helped the manufactory to greater fame than his predecessors. In the early years of his time as a sculptor, he created mainly animal representations, which convinced by their lifelike and detailed reproduction. Later followed decorative small sculptures, which approached the rococo in their playful way. Despite his high reputation, which led Kaendler among other things to the court of the Prussian King Frederick II, he left many debts at his death in 1775.
