Friedrich Leon Pohle, Portrait of a young woman. Late 19th century. Friedrich Leon Pohle1841 Leipzig - 1908 Dresden Oil on canvas, completely laminated on cardboard. Signed u.Mi. "L. Pohle". Framed in a broad black lacquered wooden moulding with golden trim. Provenance: Collection Prof. Dr. Fritz G. Altmann, Zittau and Hanover. The artist Robert Sterl writes about his teacher at the academy: "It cannot be imagined with what jubilation Leon Pohle, who took over the painting room young and fresh, was greeted by the youth" (citation after Neidhardt p. 158.) Especially in his portraits Pohle proved to be an outstanding painter. He continued the portrait art founded by Anton Graff in Dresden in a solid and realistic painting and can be regarded as one of the most important portrait painters of Dresden. Small retouchings at the lower margin of the subject as well as a retouching at the upper right in the area of the background above the hairline. A barely visible horizontal tear in the painting layer (ca. 2 cm) on the upper left in the area of the background. Due to framing slight traces of pressure in the marginal areas. Friedrich Leon Pohle 1841 Leipzig - 1908 Dresden After his studies at the academy of arts in Dresden 1856-1860 Pohle went to Antwerp in August 1860, where he became a pupil of the painter Joseph van Lerius.On his return to Germany he joined the Weimar School of Painting for two years as a pupil of Ferdinand Pauwel at the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Art. In the summer of 1866 Pohle left Pauwel's studio and returned to his home town. After several study trips he settled in Weimar as a freelance artist in 1868. 1877 he started to teach at the academy of arts in Dresden, followed shortly by a professorship. Among his students were Richard Müller, Robert Sterl, Osmar Schindler, Ernst Richard Dietze and Max Pietschmann.
