Louis ARAGON (1897-1982). Autograph manuscript, signed at head, Aragon vous parle: d'un voyage en France, [1960]; 6 pages in-4 with erasures and corrections. Evocation of France and its history in connection with Khrushchev's trip (March 1960). Aragon talks about everything he would have liked to show Khrushchev... "You can't know a country by its landscapes alone, or by the sheer spectacle of its industrial energy, for example. Especially a country like ours. France is the singular result, at this point in Europe, of contradictory forces, age-old struggles, great misfortunes and great dreams. In a limited territory, it offers more contrasts perhaps, more diversity than any other country in the world [...], the landscape changes at every turn of the road". Aragon thus first plans a few walks in Paris, the Paris of history and the Paris of painters... Then the Pont du Gard, Avignon, Normandy, Dijon, Reims, Bordeaux, Lyon, Roncesvalles, Nice, Lille; the France of the maquisards... This is the image of France, full of history and emotion, that Aragon would like to give to Khrushchev, "so that, having felt where the deep heart of our country beats, having touched its wounds [...], he will come back to us....], he would return to his people with a sense of our humanity, and the certainty that such a nation, so often torn apart, its soil so often invaded, can only desire peace, beyond all haggling and alliance games, a peace made for the whole future, for youth, lovers and songs".
