DROUET JULIETTE (1806-1883)

Autograph letter signed "Juliette" to Victor HUGO, dated "1st Thursday evening 6 o'clock" [1839]; 4 pages in-8 autographed in brown ink on a double sheet of ivory vellum. Beautiful letter from Juliette Drouet to her lover Victor HUGO. "I continue to have courage my love, but God knows at the expense of what impatience and boredom. I have promised, I will keep my promise whatever the cost. It shall not be said that I tormented my poor little beloved with my love, who works day and night. Besides, at the end of these efforts there is sky, air and happiness. I'm not complaining, Toto. I am brave. I also work, with the difference that my work makes me spend money while yours makes money. A slight difference that is worth noting. We continue to be up to our necks in dust and have been forced to caulk my chimney with abominable dishcloths to prevent the soot from coming through, which does not let me have a pleasant look when I enter my room. I hope my landlord doesn't have the nerve to ask us for a raise for the next term! Gosh, I'm capable of turning him down flat and putting all my national stubbornness into it. What, what, what. Fuck me Toto fuck me my little O. Try to make yourself visible to my naked eye if you don't want me to be the most parched and medicated of women."
