Description

GÉRICAULT Théodore (1791-1824).

L.A.S. "T. Géricault", Rome 21 September [1817], to Pierre-Joseph DEDREUX-DORCY; 1 page ¾ in8 (crease marks, slight soiling). On his departure from Rome. He is sorry to have to leave while his friend arrives in Rome. "It is one of those disgraces that only happen to me, after a year of sadness and boredom at the moment when I could be happier and when you arrive I am obliged to leave"... He reminds himself of Dorcy's sister-in-law, and then adds that he leaves "a few things that may be useful to you, such as an easel, a box of colours, and prepared canvases, and then I will send a very clever old man to look for a studio. When you have found it, start working right away, it is the only way to avoid boredom"...
